Yosemite and the Range of Light…
Yosemite, and the Range of Light... is a modular orchestral work-in-progress comprising 23 movements of varied ambiance and length, from under two minutes to over twenty. Spanning moods from tranquil to stormy and scored with forces ranging from Mozart-sized chamber orchestra to Mahlerian symphonic forces, the work is a celebration of nature, beauty, and California’s rich cultural history.
Texts include the writings of Dr. Lafayette Bunnell (Mariposa Battalion), Governor John McDougall (1851–1852), Chief Teneiya (Ahwahnechee), and Wovoka (Paiute spiritual leader). Native American prayers and wisdom from the Paiute, Miwok, Pueblo, and Hopi traditions are interwoven through spoken word and Plains Indian Hand Talk.
Each performance is curated by the conductor, who selects and arranges movements to create a unique structure and experience—whether as stand-alone pieces, selected groupings, or the full cycle.
